How Long Should You Spend Reviewing Lesson Notes Each Week?

There’s a persistent myth in language learning that more hours automatically means more progress. It’s not really true. Review time has diminishing returns fast, and a realistic, sustainable routine will get you further than an ambitious one you abandon after ten days.

What does a realistic weekly review routine look like?

For most learners taking one or two lessons a week, fifteen to twenty minutes of review, spread across three or four short sessions, is plenty. That’s not a lazy number, it’s roughly what the research on spaced repetition actually suggests works best for retention.

Little and often beats long and rare

Five minutes on Monday, five on Wednesday, five on Friday will beat a single fifteen minute cram before your next lesson. Spacing out review sessions gives your brain the repeated retrieval it needs, rather than one intense burst that fades by the following week.

How does flashcard review change the time you need?

Flashcards make short sessions genuinely productive, because every minute is spent actively recalling rather than passively scanning a page. Once you turn lessons into flashcards, a ten minute session can cover far more ground than ten minutes of re-reading a notebook ever could. Verbamor is designed around exactly these short, spaced sessions, so a busy week doesn’t mean your review has to disappear entirely.

What happens if you miss a week?

Nothing catastrophic. You’ll forget a bit more than usual, and your next session might feel slightly harder, but that’s a normal part of the process, not a reason to abandon the habit altogether. The learners who progress fastest aren’t the ones who never miss a day, they’re the ones who come back the next day when they do.

Final thoughts

Aim for consistency over intensity. Fifteen honest minutes a week, spread across a few short sessions, will do more for your vocabulary than an occasional two hour marathon you keep dreading and eventually skip altogether.
